New York, New york (PRWEB) July 01, 2012
A construction worker was taken to the hospital on Tuesday, June 26, after falling and impaling himself on a piece of metal at 4 World Trade Center. According to the FDNY, the victim is a 37-year-old male who is now in critical condition, but likely to survive.
As reported by Huffington Post, the Daily News and others, “The worker was helping to build the new skyscraper at 150 Greenwich St. when he slipped and fell 4 to 5 feet at about 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday, an FDNY spokeswoman said. The worker landed on a small steel rod he was carrying in a pouch, said a spokesman for Tishman Construction, the contractor on the site. The man suffered a puncture wound to his side and was transported to Bellevue Hospital Center, the FDNY spokeswoman said.”
As reported, “Construction workers had just added the final steel beam to WTC 4 just one day before the accident, on Monday, making this tower the closest to completion of all the buildings in the World Trade Center complex. It is expected to be finished in the fall of 2013.”
“Other recent accidents at 4 World Trade Center include a February incident in which a load of steel beams fell 40 stories from the building. Just a few months earlier, a teenager suffered a minor injury when a 4-foot rod fell from the building.”
New York constrution accident attorney Lawrence B. Saftler reacted to the news by stating, “It is imperitive that owners and general contractors comply with their obligation to maintain safe work places, including work surfaces from slippery substances or tripping hazards. Their responsibilities are continuous in making sure the worksite is as safe as possible under the continuous reality that construction worksites are inherently unsafe, dangerous and ever changing. That is why the law places so much responsibility on those who can assume the responsibility the most, the owners and general contractors, and the law protects those who need it most and can least afford it, the worker.”
